Animal testing has become a very controversial topic, and although there are many organizations against animal testing due to animal captivity and cost, it is important to continue testing on animals to be able to have products safe for human, help create new pharmaceuticals, and it less harmful to people. Organizations such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Best Friends for Animals, and many other organizations that discourage testing on animals. Organizations such as these, discourage animal testing due to the captivity of animals and the accumulation of the possible costs that animal testing would generate. However, there are many benefits to animal testing that the organizations sometimes fail to recognize. Some of these benefits include the discovery of new products that may safely be used by humans for a vast variety of treatments. Animals used in testing are generally kept in captivity. One product in particular are pharmaceutical drugs. There are many commonly side effects that come with various pharmaceutical drugs, examples are, nausea, diarrhea, and constipation. Animal testing helps scientist determine which drug can have a harmful effect on people or which can assist and save their lives. For instance, the following drugs were animal tested and are now safe for human consumption; insulin, anesthetics, and antibiotics. If these drugs were not animal tested, then we wouldn’t know what kind of effects these medications would have on humans. So without the evidence that animal testing provides, you could be taking a drug without knowing if it would cure you, kill you, or give you any kind of pain.
