Animal testing is a popular and controversial issue today, but it has been going on since the ancient times of the Greek and Romans. Some people think it is disgusting for humans to perform experiments and operations on live animals, but do not understand there are highly regulated laws that protect animals from being mistreated. There are many positives that come along with animal testing. The knowledge physicians gain allows us to find cures and treatments essential for not only humans but animals also. Those that are against testing of animals say it is cruel, but there is no other alternative for researching a living organism.
One of the main reasons people are against animal testing, is because they think those that are doing the testing treat the animals in an abusive manner. According to the Biomedical Research Association almost every medical finding in the past century has came from physicians researching animals. A few treatments that were discovered because of animal testing was insulin which saved the lives of diabetics, the polio vaccine that reduced the disease from 350,000 cases in 1988 to 223 cases in 2012, and a vaccine for Hepatitis B. Chris Abee, Director of the University of Texas stated, “We would not have a vaccine for Hepatitis B without chimpanzees,” and says chimps is “our best hope” for finding a vaccine for Hepatitis C. Which is a disease that is still around and kills nearly 15,000 americans a year. Most people assume that we test animals strictly for the health of humans. What they do not put into consideration is that those doing the testing have came up with numerous cures to save the lives of the animals also.
