Originally called the Beagle Freedom Project, the Rescue + Freedom Project (RFP) has saved the lives of animals who are the victims of animal testing, abuse, and senior animals in shelters across the United States (“FAQ”). The majority of companies use animals to test their products. In some countries, such as mainland China, animal testing is required by law before a product can be sold for public consumption; however, there are other, more humane ways to assure that these products are safe for the public (Ezendam et al). It is crucial that consumers are aware of the practice of animal testing and the alternatives to it so that they can make an educated choice about the practices they choose to support. Many animals do not survive this testing, and those who do are most often euthanized after it has concluded. Every year, it is estimated that over 100 million animals are tested on (“Experiments on Animals”). Out of that 100 million, roughly 65,000 are dogs and 20,000 are cats, the two most common pets in the United States (“Beagle Bill”). Of all the dogs being tested on in labs, nearly 96% of them are beagles. This is the breed of choice due to the beagle’s friendly, docile, and very forgiving nature. This makes them far less likely to respond aggressively to being scared and/or hurt. The animals in these laboratories live their whole lives in a cage. They do not get to go outside and feel the grass, see the sky, play with other animals, or receive human affection (“FAQ”).
