In America over 100 million animals are used each year in laboratories, and more than half of them end up dead. Humans and animals are both affected by these tests. People believe that animal testing is important because it helps scientists decide if something is safe for human use. Horrible acts of animal abuse can be reduced by placing a ban of the use of animals for experiments. Many years ago the very first recorded animal test was performed by human scientists. This was performed around 500 B.C.E in Ancient Greece (Patience 12). Alcmaeon of Croton was conducting an experiment on brain activity; he would remove the eyeballs of a healthy animal and test their blind awareness (Patience 12). Before animal use they would perform dissection …show more content…
Some of the most common animals being used are rodents, dogs, rabbits, chimpanzees and pigs. Back in 1965 a family farm owned a dalmatian, Pepper, she had escaped and was nowhere to be seen. Soon the family discovered that she had been found and sold to a hospital for medical research, but then later died during an experiment (Brulliard). This uncovered that over 61,000 dogs are being used for experiments around the world. The most common breed of dogs being used are Beagles. Along with dogs, pigs are also used very frequently in med schools (Fears). One in particular is the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga, they have been using pigs for awhile but recently stopped. Every year they used about 300 pigs, while other schools near them only used 40 (Fears). The most common industries that use the act of animal testing are medical and cosmetic, but other household industries use animals too. People argue that animal testing does not benefit the world because most are just used for cosmetic and household reasons (“Animal Testing”). In the 19th century cosmetic companies used dogs, rodents and goats to test their products. In the medical field two-thirds of Nobel Peace Prizes are won with the help of animals since the year 1902. Animal rights activists argue that the research on animals does not benefit society. Also they argue that animals have feelings and that rules should be put into
