Persuasive Essay On Animal Testing

1025 Words5 Pages

The practice of experimentation on animals has been the subject of debate for many years. It has always been regarded as the best way to experiment with cosmetic items and experimental drug tests. However, the ethics of animal testing has long been under scrutiny. Lots of people don’t understand how unpredictable the standards are when it comes to the ethical conduction of these experiments. Many of these experiments lead to animals self-mutilating from the stress and harm brought upon them. While animal testing may have been one of the most effective options in the past, that is not necessarily the case now. Animal testing has been called into question many times not only because of the loosely based regulations but also because of the alarming …show more content…

As well as with the recent advancement in technology, finding an alternative solution to animal testing is more possible than ever.
First, it is important to understand first that questions regarding the ethics of animal testing have been around for a very long time. This means that societies have long recognized the moral questions involved. Scientists have noted that the first-ever known use of animals in testing dates from 500 B.C. during the time of ancient Greece. The US didn’t start using animals for testing until 1938 and the FDA signed a law that required companies to have some sort of safety substantiation for all food, cosmetics, and drugs being released to the public. When this law was created by the FDA came out the Draize irritancy test was created (which consisted of directly exposing the animals’ skin and eyes to chemicals) and praised as the gold standard for safety assessments. Although, an article written by F. Barbara Orlans, in June 1990, outlines the rules that have been put into place and talk about why these rules have been put into place. The first line of the article begins by talking about how it is necessary to …show more content…

From new game consoles to the making of the iPhone and even toys, this market is rapidly changing. With all the changes that have gone on over the years, it’s not a big stretch to assume that technological advancements were also made. Why is it that we are still having to use animals in testing for cosmetics and research? In 2004 an article From Health & Medicine Week published by NewsRX LLC talks about the use of cultivating and using human cells in biomedical research. This has many advantages over animal testing because it had more relevant morphological, physiological, biochemical properties, and included receptors. Human cells exhibit the same advantages as animal cells and with different types of cells from different tissues, it could be used to investigate a wide range of biological phenomena in tissues. There is an issue with using human cells, they must be obtained, processed, distributed, and handled safely in an ethical manner. With a little work, steps have been taken to get past these issues such as using cell immortalization, inhibition of intracellular activities, and the use of stem cells. Although, certain animals do have very similar genetic makeup as humans, similar organ types, and animals suffer from many of the same diseases as humans making them a useful model. Although they are similar to humans in reality doing tests on these animals isn’t as effective as you may imagine. Most
