Margaret Talbot’s “Best in Class” is an enticing and informational article about the argument on whether or not Valedictorians are a good thing. Having one valedictorian has been a tradition in schools for many, many years; however, as times change, students are becoming more invested and determined in school, so many kids are missing being valedictorian by 0.001%. Therefore, Talbot brings to light both sides of the story in this extraordinary article. Although Margaret seems to not choose a side, it is obvious through her strong diction and testimonies that she believes that appointing a single valedictorian is an unfair custom throughout U.S. schools.
Tara Westover is a well-known American novelist, and her memoir Educated is her most well-known work. Her unorthodox childhood, which serves as the central theme of her biography, began with her birth into a Mormon household in Idaho to a father who was opposed to his children receiving a public education. Many philosophers believe discipline is essential to education, but there are numerous arguments over how and to what extent discipline should be implemented. One system of discipline that has been highly controversial as of lately is the No Nonsense Nurturer (NNN) model, adopted by KIPP charter schools. In this paper I will put philosophers John Locke and Alfred Whitehead in conversation with KIPP’s NNN model, and explain why I think it is an effective disciplinary system. I will do so by describing NNN model is and explain why KIPP chose to adopt it as its disciplinary system. I will then present Locke’s position on discipline in education in order to illuminate how he would likely to respond to the NNN model.

The essay, The Seven Lesson Schoolteacher, by John Taylor Gatto addresses educational curriculum with a cynical truth that transpires around the United States. His brutal honesty grasps the reader by using common sense and a hint of sarcasm to appeal to humor. The main point of his argument in my perception, states that we must develop children to be critical thinkers and not always agree with authority. By allowing the schooling in a child’s development expecting them to not question an adult’s words does lead to a population that has accepted being dumbed down. Following what has been indicated, a direct quote positions people deprived forever of finding the center of their own special genius (Gatto, part III, pars 3).

I seek to adopt the progressivism approach. Progressive education rejects traditional education as it is child-centred and not subject-centred (Reedy, 2017).
