Monday: In the first chapter of the novel, we are introduced to the Fitzgerald family. Anna, as we know, is the main character of the novel. Her sister Kate suffers from acute promyelocytic leukemia. Anna is the only one who can save Kate from donating blood and now an organ by the decision of her parents. Anna then sues her parents for medical emancipation because her sister Kate has told her to for the right reasons. Tuesday: Kate is in the hospital receiving treatment while Anna is waiting for the next step on what to do for Kate. While waiting on what the doctors have to say about Kate, Sara receives a letter from The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations that indicates a petition for medical emancipation from Anna Fitzgerald. …show more content…

Monday (Part 2): Anna is nowhere to be found. Neither Brian nor Sara know where she is. Campbell finds her in Kate’s hospital room and drives her back to the courthouse. Once Campbell and Anna arrive at the courthouse, Anna asks Campbell if she has to speak. Campbell lies and says no. Later, Anna is called to the stand. Campbell calls Dr. Bergen as his second witness. Dr. Bergen says the ethics committee has discussed whether Kate should have a kidney transplant. He says he voted against the kidney donation since he did not believe Kate would live through the procedure. Tuesday (Part 2): Campbell begins asking Brian questions on the stand and hopes that he disagrees with Sara’s statement. Brian admits that sometimes he’s disagreed with Sara, like the time they needed Anna to donate lymphocytes. Later at night, Brian and Anna go back home and Sara tells Anna she is not a bad person because she wants to be herself and Anna reminds her of herself. Wednesday (Part 2): In court, Sara questions a psychiatrist named Dr. Neaux. She asks him if Anna will suffer if Kate dies. Dr. Neaux says that if Anna donates her kidney and keeps Kate alive, she will experience a benefit. He also does not believe Anna is capable of making her own medical decisions.
