During World War II, the German Reich marched across the entire continent of Europe. During the Holocaust, many people became discouraged and lost hope in the future of society. However, the excerpts from “Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl,” written by herself, and “Hitler Youth: Growing up in Hitler’s Shadow” by Susan Campbell Bartoletti, prove that being positive and persevering is the best thing that someone can do. Whether hiding from the Nazis or already taken by them, the best response to have during conflict and chaos is maintaining a positive outlook on life and to persist through difficult times.

Good and evil in society as a whole during WWII, good and evil within the eight people in hiding, good and evil in Anne’s character, and my reaction to “I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are really good at heart,” are four topics that will be covered in this essay.

It is very disturbing that while they are hiding in the secret annex in their warm beds, while their friends are being killed in concentration camps. Like Mr. Dussel said when he first arrived at the annex “They got their call up notice” Pg 417 . I am very glad they were able to be alive as long as they could.

People are bad at heart. While some people are good at heart, no amount of good, can overcome the amount of evil in this world.

Anne Frank was one of those persons Hitler wanted to abolish so she had to hide in a secret annex for two years without any contact to the outside world which meant that they couldn’t open the windows during the day due to risking neighbors seeing them which caused her not even to have a breath of fresh air just to be able
