Book Analysis- The Devil in the White City The Chicago World’s Fair continues to be one of America’s defining moments. This is where America proved to the world they had grown up and were able to hold their own. Erik Larson eloquently illustrates the entire fair in little black words on paper. Although he was not alive during this event, Larson is able to reconstruct the story with factual events; he created twists to keep you ensnared into the story.
In the Chicago smog, H.H. Holmes lured hundreds of victims into his murder mansion, and killed them seemingly without motive or conscience. In The Devil in the White City, Erik Larson goes into a detailed description of the murders of H.H. Holmes and delves into what his motives might be. The motives of Holmes serial killings were pleasure and profit. Holmes would profit off murder by selling skeletons, life insurances fraud, and as a business strategy. After murdering Julia, Holmes got her skeleton articulated then, “[Holmes] promptly sold the skeleton to Hahneman Medical College… for many times the amount he had paid Chappell.”
Ann Rinaldi, the author of the historical fiction novel, An Acquaintance with Darkness, recounts multiple historical moments, figures and monuments in order to depict her story. Many authors such as Rinaldi herself, modify the truthfulness of the information they’ve portrayed in order to fit their story. When writing a historical fiction novel, one must contemplate whether it is justified to crumble the factual basis of any historical accounts. Arlington National Cemetery is a particular monument that Rinaldi depicts in order to illustrate the grim times of the Civil War. Proof of Ann Rinaldi’s faithfulness to historical accuracy, for the most part, was this depiction of one of the most respected cemeteries in the United States.
In The Devil in the White City Erik Larson told the stories of two brilliant men at the same time. One man was a nice, caring, hard-working, and a family man; the other was a deceitful, cheater, with a twisted appetite to murder young women and children. Burnham’s father wanted him to go to Harvard or Yale so bad had forced Burnham to study with a multitude of private tutors. Burnham had a severe anxiety disorder which made him so anxious he did not perform well on tests... therefore he never passed.
Bullying is a big issue in society. When authors put bullying into their books it helps people see that bullying is not unseen. In Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card the main character, Ender, gets bullied a lot throughout the book. At the beginning Ender gets his monitor taken out.
Not ever negative situation leads to an unwelcome outcome. Flannery O’Connor introduces how conflict changes a character for the better in her short story “Revelation”. The main character, Mrs. Turpin, likes to categorize the people she meets base on their looks and possessions. She is suddenly attacked by a patient named Mary-Grace, who is then quickly sedated. However, before the medication takes effect Mary-Grace leaves Mrs. Turpin with an insult that leaves a lasting impression that causes the protagonist to think deeply about herself as a person.
Ray Bradbury One of the best writers of the 20th century and greatest of all time is Ray Bradbury. He rejected being called science fiction and instead enjoyed to be called Fantasy. He is best known for his classic Fahrenheit 451. Ray Bradbury is one of the most celebrated authors of the 20th and is well deserved of that honor.
Have you ever wondered what society would be like in the far future, how technology would over run humans, the government mind washing the people, society having no individuality or knowledge? For my first book report of the 11th grade, I wanted to choose a book that interested me greatly with the ideas of the author, but also containing a very powerful meaning behind the novel. We are taken to a place where books have become outlawed, technology is at its prime, life is fast, and human interaction is scarce. One thing that really bothered or annoyed me was the fact that Bradbury used “man” instead of putting “person. Like were all books written by men?Other than that, I personally think this quote is really extensive because it shows how Montag shows guilt, I like how it compares a lifetime of work for writing certain books, and takes nothing but two minutes to destroy. In this society books are portrayed as being unacceptable. This society has a odd way of viewing everything. I think that television and movies are a much simpler investment in this society, If you think about it this society is kinda similar in a way to present day society, SO many people think that books are tedious but in reality they are just too lazy to search for a book that
In life, there is a reason behind every decision a person makes; Whether that decision be what to eat for breakfast, or how to respond to an email, one thing always remains constant… There are many factors that have a say in how every moment plays out. This same logic also applies to Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451. In the story, Montag’s imminent arrest, Beatty’s constant taunting, and Beatty’s subconscious desire to die bring about Montag’s decision of murdering Beatty.
The novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury shows us a future in which people spend all day in front of a television that tells them absolutely nothing useful or helpful. People fill their mind with such nothingness as that, and they do not have real-time or reason to think. The people of the future block out thoughts with their constant time in front of noise and confusion. In the book, Bradbury implies that without thought, people are just unhappy and find no reason for their life.
Once upon a time there was a witch named Maggie she was mean, ugly, and old. She had a sister named Lillie until she killed her so Maggie was banned from the island and she was put in prison. Her younger sister Alexandria was shocked she felt disappointed and didn’t have any family left except Maggie.
