For young women aged 15-24, the mortality rate of anorexia is 12 times higher than any other cause of death. Do you ever find yourself feeling like you aren’t happy with your appearance? Well, people who are anorexic think the same thing, only more drastically. What the media thinks the facts are on people with anorexia, aren’t true. Anorexia doesn’t mean you don’t eat and it does cause long term harm. Anorexia is a real illness and it’s not as easy to get over by simply eating more food. Let’s begin with the so called ‘fact’ that anorexic people never eat. To survive you must have food, this is crucial and it gives you energy function . While it is true that anorexics can be quite weak from not eating enough, they still intake food, even if it’s just one apple a day. The media likes to state that people are able to get over it by simply ‘eating a cheeseburger.’ This is false as it’s a lot more complicated than just eating food. Anorexia doesn’t just affect the body; it also affects the brain. Those suffering are found to be doing tasks such as counting their calories, skipping meals, and restricting certain food groups. They also tend to become highly obsessive and begin doing things like not eating food of a certain colour. These tasks become a part of their everyday life, it is considered normal to them and they forget that there was ever another way. Since they convince themselves that how they are behaving is normal, many of them don’t ever seek out help. In fact, according to Health Research Funding, only 1 out of 10 people with anorexia ever actually get help. This means that 9 out of 10 anorexic people, just continue to live how they are without having to confront the fact that it’s killing them.
