Anthem by Ann Rand and City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau share an abundant amount of similarity. Both of these dystopian stories share the dangers in not having individuality in their communities and how it leads to people searching for a way to escape. Throughout both of these works there is a loud expression of identity and individuality and why it is important to be oneself. Throughout both stories, they are searching for freedom and in some ways that ties back to wanting identity and individuality. ”[He] are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever” (Rand 19). The Council in Anthem was very strict on everyone being one and nobody being more than their fellow brothers. Everyone in the city was just clueless as to what was happening. This is kinda like in The City of Ember, in which the mayor didn’t want anyone to figure out that there is an exit. He wanted to keep everyone under control. “[He] awoke when a ray of sunlight fell across [his] face” (Rand 78). Once Equality escaped he realized that the world was extremely beautiful and that he got to do what he wanted instead of following orders. He was able to lay down all day instead of having to get up at the sound of the bell. Doon, Lina and Poppy once they got out from underground and the sun rose they were shocked with how beautiful everything was. These stories show a dystopian world and why it is important to be one's own self because in the case of Equality he found that it is better than following orders, and in The City of Ember it shows that one can always find one's way out of a situation if one tries hard enough.
