Anthony Burgesses A Clockwork Orange is a play about ultra-violence, corrective therapy, and the challenges of free will. Throughout the play we follow Alex and his droogs tearing up the town and committing acts of crime ranging from robbery to rape. The main concept this play brings up is of nature vs. nurture. There are many factors as to why Alex acts the way he does, these however are not brought up specifically within the play. One can assume and theorize just why he thinks the way he does. Overall, this play is an excellent example of how people treat others. Whether it be a criminal to their victim, or an authority to their inmate. In the case of Alex, we can come up with multiple reasons why he enjoys committing crimes. He was abused as a child, he was an orphan, or he is an owner of a lonely heat. These can all be triggers as to why he might be the way he is, but it all comes down to who he is. When analyzing Alex as our protagonist, we need to figure out what kind of “hero” he is. Northrop Frye’s theorizes that there are five Modes of Hero. Mythic, romantic, high mimetic, low mimetic, and ironic.
