On August 22nd, 2009, the police pulled David Leon Riley over for driving with expired license registration tags. Due to Riley’s license being suspended, the policy, through their policy, required his car to be impounded. In addition to impounding the car, they are also required to conduct an inventory search to ensure that the vehicle had all of its components at the time of the seizure, to defend against future liability claims. It also serves as a way to search for hidden contraband. During the search of Riley’s car, the police found two guns, arresting Riley for possession of firearms.
In conclusion, the Woodleys should be able to prove Harvey was peacefully conducting himself and almost certainly had a legal right to be on the property, but may have some difficultly proving Harvey did not provoke the dog, reducing the likelihood they will prevail. Given the Woodleys need to prove all three of these elements to be successful, it is probable the Woodleys have a claim for Harvey’s injuries sustained from Arthur Androcles’ dog under the Illinois Dog Bite
United States v. Mark James Knights, 219 F. 3d 1138 Issue: The issue involved in this case is whether the respondents Fourth Amendment rights were infringed upon when law enforcement searched his home without a warrant. Even though respondent agreed to the terms of probation following release, which included searches of his person or premises with or without a warrant (The United States Department of Justice, 2014). It also means he understands what kind of help they need to break the cycle of violence. This knowledge has helped him to develop several “Beacon Schools”. These are charter schools that educate children during the day, with the guarantee that every child will get into college. They have extended school hours and offer courses that run in the summer. After hours, the buildings are used as community centers to help adults with parenting or life skills.
On the tenth anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an article was published in a religious magazine by Cesar Chavez. Dr. King was a leader of the African American civil rights movement, his work, speeches and spread of non-violence inspired many people. He led many marches and uprisings in the African American community, which played a key role in the civil rights movement against inequality. Cesar Chavez, leader of the Chicano movement and labor union organizer, drew inspiration from the strategies of conveyed throughout Dr. King's speech. Cesar Chavez uses this article to persuade and spread the idea of non-violence to fellow Chicanos and leaders in addition to keeping Dr. King's values by using comparison, cause and effect and diction.
Since I started participating in the CBAs, I have become active in the Houston-area HLS Alumni Association as a member of its Board of Directors. By way of example, in March 2016, I introduced two black HLS alumni, both of whom were elected to high municipal office in Houston, Mayor Sylvester Turner and Council Member Amanda Edwards, at a reception in their honor sponsored by the Association. It is unlikely that I would have been interested in becoming involved with the local HLS Alumni Association to the extent that I have were it not for the CBAs. It was not necessary for David to take on the work entailed in organizing the CBAs to satisfy his community service at the Law School. But following through as he did to make the CBAs happen illustrates, as clearly and powerfully as anything else I could cite, how truly special David is to the HLS community, and what an extraordinary Dean he would make.
During the Wes Moore event he said many valuable things that can be applied to all different aspects of life. His speech connects to the theme of “Just Communities” in two important ways. One way is how the people of Baltimore care deeply for what their environment is like. After the riots and fights he says how no one shows the people who came out to clean up the aftermath. This has been a common part of “just communities” that our class has studied.
Stokely Carmichael participated in many non violence issues prior to his statement “The society we seek to build among black people is not a capitalist one. It is a society in which the spirit of community and humanistic love prevail.” (Document E) The issue of violence versus non violence was very prevalent, in the case of the Civil Rights movement. A quote by the Black Panther’s minister of defense says that “the time has come for black people to arm themselves against this terror before it is too late.”
His general community leadership paved the way for how peaceful activism should
The Rodney King riots impacted many people in the United States in many ways, and Matheson and Baade explain one large impact that they
Examining the specific case of Maria Carter, and the violence she experienced with the Ku Klux Klan, gave more justification towards the need of a government-issued change that the Klan, and other hate groups, would not like to disobey. Carter witnessed one of the most violent instances with the Klan, in which she testified that “they struck her [neighbor] over the head with a pistol. The house looked next morning as if somebody had been killing hogs there. Some of them said ‘Fetch a light here, quick;’ and some of them said to her, ‘Hold a light.’ They said she held it, and they put their guns down on him and shot him” (United States, “Testimony Taken by the Joint Select Committee”).
This terror of violence was spurred by the KKK that expanded its influence as far as the North and west” (1920s, WWI, Segregation PowerPoint 2/7/16). Violence didn’t just end there. “A prominent negro attorney, caught up in the force’s crackdown, was dragged out of his car and searched at gunpoint by a snarling cop” (Boyle 121). Being forceful and grabbing a man out of his car to search him is wrong. Boyle shows that these violent actions were not of just KKK members, but individuals of society who believed they were superior and continued to deny the rights and
Almost everyone can say that they have experienced some type of loss during their lifetime, whether that be losing car keys or the loss of a loved one. Loss is hardly ever easy and can vary in the amount of pain or heartache one may feel. Some might feel nothing at all when something is lost. It is important to evaluate how loss impacts characters in literary works in order to gather a true understanding of both the novel and the persona of the individual characters. Head, Heart and Nebraska have similar literary elements, including plot, characterization, setting, tone, and type of narration.
Put yourself in a position where you felt unconditional love for a certain individual and you wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of your life with them along with your children together. Imagine yourself in twenty years, rocking on a porch surrounded by a white picket fence, sipping tea out of a mug your child made for you, being surrounded by people you couldn’t live without, and feeling nothing but pure happiness. This is what it means to be a family. In the past, the word “family” had primarily been associated to a heterosexual married couple with a few children and whoever else was related them by blood. While this could be what some people believe to be the true meaning of the word, “family” can also be connected to a group of
