Recommended: Reflection on writing skills
Among the three essays, “How My Illiterate Grandmother Raised an Educated Black Man” by Terrell Jermaine Starr occupied my mind most. Objectively, it is in part because it was the first essay I read; therefore, it offered me a strong impression comparing to other essays. Subjectively, the story itself was truly interesting and moving. In addition, the title was like both a brief summary and the curiosity trigger.
STYLE 1. How important is the title of an essay? What should it do? How effective is this one, and why?
In history I find Andrew Jackson was a interesting character because I do not know why he is on the $20 bill. His ego makes him more a tough contender in history since no one tends to have that authoritarian feeling. The entire essay I kept
Canty uses positive diction in the passage. For example, he uses words such as “awash,” “girls on vacation,” and “ King of the world.” The use of positive diction helps the audience think positively of the fair. The word choice shows the fair is a fun experience and it encourages readers to attend a fair. The device serves to give people who never tried out the fair a different reaction.
In my opinion, Guezlo’s essay was stronger purely because he answered so many questions from the opposition. He used facts and kept out a bias tone in his essay and I feel that Harding’s essay lacked many facts and citations that could’ve made his argument stronger. From the beginning of Guezlo’s essay to the end, he makes his points clear and uses rational thinking to support his thesis, whereas Harding could have touched on subjects more, and used too much emotional bias to make his case. In conclusion, I would argue that Guezlo’s essay was stronger and he did a better job supporting his thesis.
Fifth Favorite Essay out of Top Five “Everglades’ Change in Environment” made my top five because I had many different types of information on the Everglades and I supported each reason by using explicit textual evidence. Although my conclusion was only a couple of sentences, I think that it summed up the whole essay perfectly. Everglades’ Change in Environment The Everglades is a national park found in Florida filled with swamps, trees, and wildlife. The Everglades is full of life, but it is now facing a drought which has eroded the original wetlands by 50%.
“Should everybody write” is the question that is argued throughout the article Should Everybody Write by Dennis Baron. Baron, an English professor at the University of Illinois, incorporates essay styled writings in correspondence to English problems faced in today’s world. His main concern in this essay is to demonstrate to his audience a proper answer to the argued statement and uses rhetorical strategies throughout his article to support his claims. The use of tone is incorporated when he discusses the context of writing history. His purpose in this article is discussed using his strong sense of logic and he also conveys to his audience’s emotions to caution them on their own writing or writing fears.
Compare and Contrast Writers will often get inspired by an idea, notion, or belief, for this is the basis of writing. As a result, the authors will document their thoughts on the subject, as writers do. However, a person’s writing reflects their personality as much as their writing ability, although some types of writing require a more factual approach. Furthermore, with someone’s personality comes their opinions as well.
The essay I chose is “The Top Reason to Adopt a Pet” by the Humane Society. The reason I chose this particular essay is adoption is very near and dear to my heart and I think everyone should adopt pets. The author organizes the essay using eight different points of why you should adopt a pet. Also the author doesn’t use high style to get her point across.
Making an ideal essay is can be simply when you have a technique or strategies you plan on using that will help your essay flow. Using some of the techniques I listed such as quotes, emotion, examples, evidence that Gay used in her essay will help you have a structure and help build your essay. Always remember to keep they reader’s attention especially through your whole
Over the course of English 1302 at Texas Tech, I feel that my skills as a writer improved significantly. When beginning the class, I knew little about writing a literature review or researched argument. With the help of my instructor’s lectures and the University Writing Center, I was able to effectively get my point across effectively while forming a well developed and well spoken manner. The advice given to me about argumentative essays and integrating sources helped significantly over the course of this class, and the skills learned in English 1302 helped me in other classes this semester when writing as well. One of the things I have learned that influenced me the most was my professor’s advice about an argument.
Beside responsibility, class division and love, lies and deceit are some of the important themes in ‘An Inspector Calls’. Priestley used the characters in the play to symbolise the society of England in the early 20th century, which was full of weaknesses; The majority of the upper class abuse the working class people. The characters in the play were from an upper class family, and they were all involved in the death of working class girl, in different ways. The Inspector was used by the author to reveal their responsibility by making them confess, and by this way, J.B Priestley has unveiled the hypocrisy of the society.
In my argument essay, I tried to voice a strong opinion, but fell short. Although our process analysis essays and cover letters haven’t been graded yet, I believe that I portrayed a more confident tone and style in those than I did in my argument essay. While writing those particular essays, I focused more on meeting the requirements sufficiently and voicing my opinion effectively. I believe that gaining this kind of insight on essay-writing is a reflection of improvement in my writing skills and overall
In this essay I will review how I have improved as a writer, my greatest challenges, and how has my writing changed from how it was at the start of class to now. Reflection is a powerful thing, I can still remember how it felt being asked to write an essay on my first day of class. I was so scared, would I be able to use correct punctuation and how bad will it affect my grade if I am not? I was so excited when the professor said it was just to see that we can write conformed sentences not to critique our grammar and punctuation.
The first reason on why I chose this essay is because it changes the point of view multiple times throughout the paper. For example, in paragraph 4 and 5 the author explains that at night in the narrow streets of Soho in New York City woman get scared and fear the worst from the author, who is black. From there, the author explains what he thinks and the woman is thinking during the same situation. It draws attention for the reader and keeps the reader’s eyes glued on the paper when reading this. The second reason why I chose this essay is because it is very personal.
