It has been more than 70 years since one of the most horrific genocides in recent history. But since then, and even now, the Jewish people are not safe from persecution. In the mid 1900s, in the wake of World War II, Adolf Hitler had become the supreme chancellor of Germany, and with his rise to power, came the following years of systemic oppression to the Jewish population, leading up to the holocaust. Yet, in the hundreds of years before, and even now, after such an event, the Jewish people are still met with hostility and discrimination across the globe. The history of Jewish persecution began as early as biblical times. However, Jewish persecution is far different from what it once was. In biblical times, the Jews faced geographical and attitude-driven hate, but modern anti-semitism started in the years preceding World War II. Today, Jewish persecution has become much more globalized, as anti-semitism has evolved into hatred based on prejudices, conspiracy theories, geological differences, and countless more reasonings. In Poland, for example “both government and citizens are denying their involvement as a country in the holocaust.” (Gladstone, "Poland's Holocaust Denial and Anti-Semitism Run Far Deeper Than Just Its Latest Controversial Law." 1) Additionally, anti-semitism is on the rise in places that have not historically been anti-semitic. Almost as if they not only accepted it themselves, but were proud of it. This is shocking example of how what is deemed “acceptable” by societal structures around the world has changes, because this was not always socially expected, and certainly was not socially accepted. For example, in response to the outcomes of the 2016 elections, one man from Florida, in an interview, had stated “Trump is going to finish what Hitler started.”( "Anti-Semitic Incidents Up 86 Percent Compared With Same Time Last Year.") This ongoing social issue that seems to be taking place in the world today is likely very frightening for the Jewish populations around the globe.
