A tragic hero is a character in the story who attempts to be heroic but makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his or her own death as defined by Aristotle. There are three main Characteristics of a tragic hero. These characteristics reveal themselves through the character Antigone, who in the story is faced with a conflict caused by the king Creon who is also her uncle; and has declared that the body of Antigone’s brother Polynices may not be given a proper burial because he led the rebel army that invaded Thebes, but Antigone wishes to give her brother a proper burial knowing the consequences of doing so. In this classic tragedy written by Sophocles the character Antigone resembles the characteristics of a tragic hero.

For example, in the story where Antigone was captured and brought to Creon and Creon ask her if she confesses to the accusation that the Sentry told him and she said, “I do. I deny nothing”(Sophocles 826). After creon questioned her she knew that she was caught because of what she did and is owning up to it. The quote also shows how Antigone is a tragic hero by revealing that she is responsible for her own actions even if they do not seem wrong to her. Another example, occurs around the same time Creon questions Antigone and Creon says that she is boasting barefaced anarchy but Antigones says, “I should have praise and honor for what I have done. All these men here would praise me”(Sophocles 828). Creon is angry that Antigone knows what she has done and she doesn’t care and feels like what she is doing is the right thing to do and the around here would agree to that. As also observed in this quote Antigone again reveals how she is a tragic hero by illustrating that she is responsible for own actions.
