Antigone vs. Othello

Antigone is a classical Greek tragedy written by Sophocles, an ancient Greek play writer from the Golden Age. On the other hand, Tragedy of Othello, the Moor of Venice is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare from the Elizabethan era. In the play Antigone, Antigone was the protagonist and Creon was the antagonist. The basic plot is that Polyneices did not receive a proper burial after he died. Antigone is determined to give her brother a proper burial even if it means having to go against her uncle, Creon (king of Thebes), and the rules of the state. Antigone takes place in the city of Thebes and Othello takes place on the island of Cyprus. Along with this we can see that the plots both include locations that are ruled by a king. Moreover, since both of these plays are a tragedy we can see that there are both evil characters and evil motives in the play. For example, in the beginning of the play Antigone, Creon is villainous and he sticks to making his choices as a leader rather than for the better of his people. It is clear to see that his power as a king overrules him forcing him to make thoughtless decisions that results in a disaster. Also, in the play Othello, Iago is jealous and angry of Othello for several reasons. He is a villainous character and has many evil motives that drive him to ruin Othello’s life for good. On the other hand, there also are heroic characters in both of the plays. In the end of the play Antigone we see that Creon transforms into a hero, although it is too late. He realizes what he has done and tries to save the disaster by wanting to let his niece free. In the end of the play Othello, Othello realizes his friend Iago has manipulated him by making him jealous and telling him rumors of an affair that Desdemona never even had. In the end Othello is left in pain and he regrets killing the love of his life. All in all, Creon and Othello have similar roles in
