Antony vs. Brutus Argumentative Essay “You stabbed me then pretended you were the one who was bleeding.” - Anonymous. In Shakespeare’s The Tragedy Of Julius Caesar, Brutus and Antony both delivered speeches following the death of their disputed ruler. Both Brutus and Antony must convince the people that Caesar's death was not their fault to ensure that the anger of Caesar's death doesn’t turn to them. Brutus, a friend of Caesar, attempts to convince the people that Caesar's death was merely for their good. Meanwhile, Antony attempts to avenge Caesar's death by spotlighting his nobleness and kindness to the people of Rome. The ideas of rhetoric eventually led to the death of a ruler. Instead he would avenge his friend Caesar and bring light to his legacy. During his speech Antony reflects on Caesar's life and how often people's lives are forgotten once buried. However, Caesar's life is not to be forgotten. “The evil that men do is remembered after their deaths, but the good is often buried with them. It might as well be the same with Caesar” (Shakespeare.3.2.73-74). Mark Antony brings attention to the scenario that often takes place after someone dies. Instead of looking at the great things that Caesar accomplished like providing housing for captives, many looked at the tyrannical rule that Caesar may have embodied. Mark Antony also talks about his loyalty to the people he trusts the most. Caesar has not betrayed Antony and therefore Antony decided to stay loyal to his friend. “I will not do them wrong. I would rather wrong the dead, and wrong myself for you, than wrong such honorable men'' (Shakespeare.3.2.120-123). In this moment, Antony talks about how he rather wrong anyone but Caesar for he has done too much for people to be disloyal. The idea of logos and pathos is used throughout Antony's speech to convince the audience to honor Ceasar
