Recent studies show that after a person relaxes, the synapses in their brain are firing at a much higher rate than if they were not able to relax. According to the article “Why your brain needs more downtime” downtime is essential for the brain and is needed to “keep up the good work” as any boss would say, no matter whether it 's a college student who works at home on a computer screen all day or it’s a high school student trying to juggle football practice, grades and a part-time job, everyone needs more down time. In the article “ Anxiety The Busy Trap” Kreider explains how his friend moved away from the hassle of New York City to a small town in France he says, “Not long ago I Skyped with a friend who was driven out of the city by high rent and now has an artist’s residency in a small town in the south of France. She described herself as happy and relaxed for the first time in years. She still gets her work done, but it doesn’t consume her entire day and brain...What she had mistakenly assumed was her personality — driven, cranky, anxious and sad — turned out to be a deformative effect of her environment.” Kreider 's friend had fallen for the illusion that she was the problem that she was just mean and cranky and sad all the time because that was just her personality but in reality she was just a product of her environment and once away from the busy city she had finally found a sense of calm and happiness. Similarly in the article “ Why the Brain Needs More Downtime” Ferris Jabr explains how a freelance writer and meditation teacher Michael Taft meditation refuge. He states “When you go on a long retreat like that there’s a kind of base level of mental tension and busyness that totally evaporates,” Taft says. “I call that my ‘mind being not full.’ Currently, the speed of life doesn’t allow enough interstitial time for things to just kind of settle down.” When Taft took a break from his busy schedule as a teacher he found that his mind felt less full and he felt he didn 't have to be busy, that he was just content on being able to
