I viewed Frontline a documentary series, which episode was entitled Poor Kids. The frontline personnel spent time with three children Kailey, Johnny, and Britany along with their families as they all struggle financially. We perceive a glimpse of what it is like to live below the poverty line in America through a child’s eyes. Social Gospel, on the other hand, could be considered more of a social movement than a theory. Social Gospel is defined as "Christian faith practiced as a call not just to personal conversion but to social reform. " This attitude is nearly the opposite of Social Darwinism when it comes to how Americans viewed themselves in relation to others of lower social status around them. Most prevalent during the late 1800s to early 1900s, Social Gospel was characterized by strong feelings of social responsibility and the idea that salvation could be achieved through service to the poor. During the late 1800s, many reformers were inspired to help the urban poor, and settlement houses began to spring up in slum neighborhoods.
Fam▪i▪ly n. a group consisting of parents and children living together in a household. The common image that accompanies ‘family’ is two parents-married- and a smattering of children-usually two or three- and perhaps a dog and a cat. They most likely attend or host a barbeque every other weekend, detachedly engaged in their suburban life. Average though this image is among the American imagination, it is actually an outlier when considered in the fabric of United States familial diversity. Though this type of family does exist, it’s much more accurate to describe family simply as society.
I was raised in a single-parent household, by my mother, along with my brother. We were economically disadvantaged because mother’s salary was not sufficient to cover the entirety of expenses, or provide for additional needs. Furthermore, we did not have financial support from my father, because my parents were divorced. There were times when my mother gathered financial resources from other family members, and public assistance to pay for expenses such as clothing, food, and utilities. Fortunately, I was able to receive loans and grants to pay for my tuition, because my mother could not afford to.
Most people belong to a family. Whether they like the people in their family, or not, really depends on the individual. Let it be known that “…all families can be looked at as dysfunctional; they just vary in terms of the degree and severity of dysfunction” (Shelley). Unfortunately, I can apply several dysfunctional family concepts to my most intimate, personal relationship-my marriage. Thus, the following is a compilation of dysfunctional family perceptions that I can apply to my own life.

Despite the many differences among the American population, nearly all Americans consider themselves apart of a family. The idea of having a family is essential as it provides people with a sense of strength, comfort, and belongingness. However, over the past several decades, the concept of what makes up a family has continued to change. Although the U.S. Census Bureau defines a family “…as a group of two or more persons related by birth, marriage, or adoption and residing together,” others hold much broader definitions (Cox & Demmitt, p. 29, 2014).
