I knew when I transferred to CSUB, that just obtaining my bachelors degree wasn’t going to be enough for the career path that I had chosen. My plan was always going to have to include graduate school. Therefore, upon graduation I’m hoping that I will be accepted into graduate school. I’m actually in the process of applying to the Masters of Science Degree in Counseling with an emphasis in Student Affairs program here at CSUB. I always wanted to work in a career that allowed me to help other individuals. I definitely have always had a real passion and interest for serving, which is why I spend a lot of my time serving in the community. There are many skills that one needs when choosing a career in counseling, in fact many I feel you learn along the way. However, I feel like there are two skills one absolutely needs when going into this type of work. One of those skills, is good social and communication skills and the other is the ability to critically think in any given situation or circumstance. Furthermore, I feel like these skills are important whenever you’re working with a diverse group of individuals. I’m a firm believer that there is always room for improvement, but I do feel like I posses these critical skills. The reason that I could say that is in part because of my prior work experiences. Before I decided to come back to school, I worked a full-time job in a very fast paced dental office, where I had to constantly practice my communication and critical thinking skills. I also do a lot of volunteer work with some of the poorest individuals in our community. Therefore, I have worked in environments with some of the wealthiest individuals as well as some of the poorest individuals. The knowledge that I have gained in these experiences has ultimately equipped me with the skills I need to further my education. The second part to that is my college education. The time that I have spent here at CSUB taking core classes has also been a big contributor to the knowledge and training I have gained. For instance, many of our classes not only encourage us but also require us to actively participate and contribute in class discussions. This has helped me to become comfortable with my communicating my thought s and opinion. Likewise, it has also allowed me to learn how to comfortably get the points I’m trying to make across in a professional manner. I also was able to utilize my educational training out in the workforce through an internship I gained through one of the courses I was able to take here. This
