What draws me to City Corps is my interest in protecting the city I call home. Being a "Brooklynite" in an low income neighborhood, life was not easy growing up as a black man. As a child, I lived through hardships like losing both my grandmother and my mother at before the age of 16. The joy I get from helping people is a feeling that never goes away, but is also a concept that is increasingly neglected and being replaced with racism. Being apart of the conversation is the only way you can begin to find a solution to the growing complex social issues in our society today. I have learned that work conditions change from day to day and throughout the day, as well, no matter where I have worked in the past. I also have realized that certain projects require individual attention and others involve a teamwork approach. These are just a few examples of the changes that happen when working in public service. Being flexible with both my time and skills to adapt to the demands of the job has allowed me to grow and be successful in my work. City Service Corps provides me with a unique experience to not only give back to my community in a position that I'm passionate about, but also supports me in further pursuit of my goals. Although I do not hold a degree just yet, City Service allows me the opportunity to have access to being apart of this program where I can network and interact with other individuals like myself who could possibly become mentors for me. Additionally, a year of service with City Corps will assist me into taking my next step in life. I plan to attend college in pursuit of my college degree since obtaining my high school equivalency diploma. My own personal measure of growth in a job is acquiring new skills, new knowledge, and new insights for me to use to help
