Aquis Great Barrier Reef Resort is a resort located at Yorkeys Knob, which is one of the beach suburbs of Cairns, in Far North Queensland. The location of the resort is attractive because it is close to one of the World Heritage sites, which are the Great Barrier Reef and Wet Tropics rainforests. The resort hopes to attract tourists to Cairns and Far North Queensland and making them the top tourists destinations in the world. Aquis’ goal is to boast the local economy and compete on the world stage for international and domestic tourists. The development scale of Aquis is extremely large; in fact the resort represents the largest investment in Australia’s tourism infrastructure, with total capital budget of $8 billion. The authors have been analyzing its consequences of the resort. They have conducted a site visit to gather data and background information through interviews with the resort managers, local government officials and village head. Plus, additional thirty interviews with residents of a village that were close to the resort. Paradise resort had a negative social impact on the local. The resort has promise the local to have huge boast in incomes, employments and also business opportunities (Simpson & Wall, 1999). At first the local were positive with their new home, access to electricity and piped water. However, after the development, the local was dissatisfied with the insignificant employment available, resulting local unable to pay for new facilities provided (Simpson & Wall, 1999). Also, as no local owns agricultural land anymore the residents were unable to support their family and most people left the village to find new jobs (Simpson & Wall, 1999). The authors have concluded that lack of employment was because the resort only needs highly professional staff and there were only few positions for unskilled workers (Simpson & Wall, 1999). Comparing with Aquis, the resort has also expected to increase the local employment in Cairns, which would benefit the government and the local community. The Mombasa resort town has a similar case with the previous resort that I have mentioned, which is the Paradise resort in Indonesia. There has been a problem in the residents’ perception of the development before and after. Before the development of the resort, the residents have been supporting the resort. About 70% of the residents have admitted that poverty is the main problem that they face and 91% believe that the tourism operation will benefit the local region (Akama & Kieti, 2009). The methodology in this case study was by conducting questionnaires, interviews and field observation of the local residents. The study was done from June to July in 2002, where there were about two hundred and twenty-seven local resident interviewed. The information was then, organized and analysed using computer statistical packages. The objective of Mombasa case study was to look at the socioeconomic development in Kenya resort. The authors have concluded that due to the intervention of the external stakeholders and failure in decision and management has led to limited number of involvement of the residents toward the resort (Akama & Kieti, 2009). Additionally, as government and other external stakeholders are already involved with Aquis, there would be possibility of this problem would happen.
