Archetypes are ways that seemingly different pieces of art find common ground. The short film collaboration of Destino by Salvador Dali and Walt Disney Productions shares the same theme as the statue “Wild Mood Swings” created by Tim Noble and Sue Webster. Both forms of media display the circle of life, which is reinforced by showcasing the fear of time progressing, the attempts to stay consistent with changes, and inspiring others to try viewing life from new angles.

The woman’s facial features are wrinkled and sagging with an unhappy countenance; it then melts into nothingness. The main character regards this experience with sadness for the future, and her own visage takes on a fearful state as she realizes this could be her own future; she could become unimportant and forgotten. As she leaves the old woman statue, she turns to find younger-looking statues that are energized and happily playing instruments. Her mood drastically improves while she dances around the statues, deciding that she would do anything to stay young, happy, and remembered. The artwork titled “Wild Mood Swings” similarly displays time depreciating items. The piece is composed of wooden scraps, but most importantly, wooden step ladders are utilized to symbolize the continuation of time as well. Each step up the ladder is like a new step of advancements in society. At one point the stepladder was new and useful, but then it began deteriorating and losing its stability, making it useless to those requiring it to climb. Instead of completely discarding the ladder, the artists gave the ladder a new purpose; they showed how civilization continues climbing the rungs of progression with methods such as recycling and reusing. Seeing people in distress can cause others to try to encourage them to bounce back. Encouragement doesn’t only apply to hardships in life, it can be viewed as a motivational platform to inspire people to attempt something new. People experience vastly different things throughout their lifetimes. That being said, one person may be more knowledgeable in certain situations than others. By sharing knowledge and expertise, individuals, groups, and communities thrive from unity and collaboration. In Destino, encouragement is shown when the main character helps a man who is trapped inside these towering walls. She notices this man off in the distance, yet when she attempts to get closer, these tall, stone walls rise from the sandy dunes, impeding them from reaching each other. The main character releases birds from within her chest that fly over the walls to reach the man. Then the birds successfully lead the man from the maze to unite with the main character. As aforementioned, the main character frequently changes herself to stay consistent with the changing times and interests; therefore, she has had much more experience dealing with hardships and finding new ways to solve problems. The birds she releases to help the man are symbolic of the assistance she shares with him, encouraging him to look for a different path to take in order to escape the giant, growing walls.
