This annotated biography addresses the arguments against zoos. The reason why I am interested in this topic is that while people claim benefits of zoos, there are some drawbacks existing. Moreover, the articles are also helpful for my argument essay as well as my debate in AR&T class. Overall, throughout this paper, I will illustrate why zoos do not provide a healthy environment for animals and how captive animals suffer from zoos’ mistreatments such as abuse and neglect.

At each of the zoos investigated, cramped spaces restrain animals from movement and physical exercise that is supposed to have in the wild. Those animals are on the verge of having damages in legs and feet. Further, a few species are kept in old cages and do not provide privacy, which leads to mental illness Poor hygiene and sanitation is also the reason why captive animals get health problems and spread diseases quickly. Besides, animals in Spanish zoos are treated as “performers”. Indeed, as claimed by the Animal Equality, six of eight zoos in Spain operate entertaining performances with species including sea lions, dolphins and so on. This causes fear and anxious behaviors to zoo animals. What is worse, in Madrid zoo, there are some species of dolphins hit on the face while being on display to the public. As a result, zoo’s lifespan is not long and caged animals easily get depressed.
