The Merriam Webster dictionary defines the concept of uniform as dress of the same style, materials and color worn by a group. Spencer (2013) states that, “A shirt, tie and blazer may not be the ingredients for my favorite outfit, but if I were given the choice, I wouldn 't throw away the idea of school uniform. Wearing a uniform is a badge of pride, creates an identity for a school and is an important part of being a school student.” Imagine being able to wake up every morning, get out of bed, put on the same thing you wore the day before, and head off to school. The teenage years are a time when adolescents try out different personas, often trying out different styles of fashion. Adversaries argue that uniforms suppress an individual’s freedom of expression. However, the clothes that people wear, or can afford to wear, often classify the group by which they are acknowledged. As a result, many teens are outcast due to the fact that they cannot afford the latest trends in clothing. This rejection can lead to a number of problems for the outcast teen: depression, inability to focus on schoolwork, or just a general feeling of inferiority. School uniforms put everyone on the same level. According to (PhD) Karin Polacheck (1995), “Uniforms help to create amid diversity by easing ethnic and cultural tensions and encouraging values of tolerance and civility.” School Uniforms permit students to relate with one another without experiencing the socioeconomic barrier that non-uniform schools generate. The school uniform would always have the school logo and name on it, regardless of which school it is, or at least initials. Students who make unnecessary actions and disrupt the crowd might get reported to the school principal. Therefore, students must uphold the school and their own reputation. When the whole student body is dressed in uniforms, they acquire a stronger team mentality. When they are all dressed alike, their all-for-one-and-one-for-all comradery is boosted therefore it builds a positive environment for them. Some people may claim that students can have more independence and can show off their originality and creativity by not wearing the traditional ‘boring’ school uniforms, but not wearing school uniforms not only triggers disturbance, it might also cause students to wear scantily, which is inelegant and not pleasing at all. This educate children the lesson of respect and prioritizing, setting studies over fashion, since their central focus should be on studying now. Therefore, school uniforms teach students respect and the importance to prioritize.
