Gun Control Although many Americans believe enforcing Gun control laws will reduce the amount of gun related violence, Gun laws such as taking away firearms from law abiding citizens would only leave them vulnerable to violence because, criminals who seek to harm will still have access to firearms while citizens who obeyed the law will be put in harm’s way with no way to defend themselves. Gun control should not be further added to because people, not guns, are the problem. Guns are simply scraps of material, they are inanimate objects with no intentions or emotion. Although gun control laws seem like a successful alternative, they would only apply to law abiding citizens. “If gun control were a panaca, then Washington, D.C, Oakland, and chicago, which have have very strict gun control laws would be among the safest places to live. Yet, they are the most dangerous. Gun bans leave law-abiding citizens vulnerable. Defensive gun use can be reported as high as 2.1 million to 2.5 million times per year across the nation (Malcom/Marshall 1). There are Approximately three hundred million guns within private homes (not including the unregistered firearms). If guns were to be successfully taken away, only the registered guns could be counted for therefore, criminals could likely still access firearms (Burris 1). Reports of gun violence within or near areas that allow law abiding, gun registered citizens has gone silent due to the fact that there is nothing go report (Burris 2). Although Chicago has “some of the strictest gun laws” in the country in 2016, four thousand people were found victim of gun related crime. Between 2015 and 2016 gun homicides within the city rose by an astounding 61 percent, particularly huge compared to other Cities ( 25.1 per 100,000 residents) while (14.1 per 100,000) in Philadelphia and only (2.3 per 100,000 ) in New york (Kurtzleben 1). States around Chicago have relatively low scores on the grade scale from the law center to prevent gun violence.
