Euthanasia has had many supporters in the U.S, about 42%, claims Fox news, but has only been legalized in Oregon, Washington D.C, Washington, California, Colorado, and Vermont. Euthanasia is the practice of a doctor intentionally ending a life in order to relieve pain and suffering. The treatment is mainly for people who have a terminal illness and is only performed under the patients request. Euthanasia needs to be legal in all states because it would allow people to die with dignity, they wouldn’t have to suffer, and the family of the patient wouldn’t have to suffer financially. A person with a terminal illness should have the choice to die with dignity. Others shouldn't be able to choose what you want to do for yourself and they shouldn't be judged for making this decision. According to Esther B. De La Torre, “...people who have a terminal disease can diminish their ability to take care of themselves. This causes them to have 24 hour assistance. The American Cancer Society states that a terminal illness is an “irreversible illness that in the near future will result in death or a state of permanent unconsciousness from which the person is unlikely to recover”(cancer.org). This reveals that terminal illnesses can not be cured and will cause discomfort to the patient. As stated by Bill Muehlenberg, “...there is still the obligation to relieve pain and suffering. If we do what we can to relieve pain and in the process hasten death, there is still no moral blame, since we could not preserve life”(billmuehlenburg.com).
