Described in Cohen’s essay, is the extensive insight into how monsters are defined. He says that these monsters are defined by seven different aspects having to do with their appearance, character, or representation. Cohen’s first point is that monsters are always representations or symbols of a particular culture. They are made to life because of emotions or environment in that culture. He states, “The monster is born only at this metaphoric crossroads, as an embodiment of certain cultural moment--- of a time, a feeling, and a face” (Cohen).
My favorite sentence from this reading had to be, "The arms were in sad shape, because everybody was always sitting on them, but they were pretty comfortable chairs." (Salinger 18). In the short sentence, I furthermore get a glimpse of Holden's voice and personality, this time by seeing him contradict himself. He describes how sad looking and beat up the chair is, yet goes on to say how nice and comfortable it is. This to me is a very important clue to Holden's overall personality in regard to life.
For instance a monster could be a group of people who cause harm on to a group in society. A monster could be someone who could come off as a nice person but really have bad intentions. What is a monster in reality? Sure, you could say they are predators that creep in the night, awaiting their next victim- it could be you. It could be said that monsters are the darkest parts of ourselves that we externalize, to understand them. Or maybe none of those ideas at all. What if, a monster could be the person typing every single letter you are reading right now?
People always look back to the past with memories they cherish. In The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger, Holden is no different. In this book, the character Holden looks back to happier times and doesn't like things changing. Holden's main conflict is wanting things to stay the same or to go back to how they were in the past; through the way Holden talks about things and the way people were in the past. Salinger suggests that Holden does not want things and people to change, and he wants to be able to go back to the way things were.

The root word for “monster” is “monstrum”, which means that which reveals or warns. A monster is the product or symbol of a culture from which the monster comes from.
