George Washington once said, “If the freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.” I agree with this quote, and feel that America should never lose this right, as it gives people freedom, unlike the society in the book, Anthem. In my opinion, America is not an Anthem society because America is a land of freedom, not censorship, due to our individual rights such as the freedom of speech, which gives us freedom of thought and expression. This is the ability to express oneself is the right to express one's ideas and opinions freely through speech, writing, or other forms of communication. This right gives people the power to express their views on something through published articles, books, television, radio broadcasting, artwork, the internet, or other ways of communication. However, the people in the Anthem society were not able to do these things. For example, Equality-72521 was not allowed to express that he wanted to stay a student forever, but he couldn’t, knowing that in doing so, he would be committing a sin. Another time Equality-72521 was not allowed to express what he wanted was when he figured out that he was in love with Liberty 5-3000, or The Golden One. However, he could not express how he felt about her, because of the laws made by the City Council. Because expressing your true individual feelings was not allowed in the society of Anthem, America is not like an Anthem
