Is college worth it? This is a question that many people considering college, or students who are already attending college often ask themselves. I, myself have asked this question time and time again. There are many advantages to going to college and getting a degree, but along with all the great perks that college has to offer it also comes with many disadvantages as well. The perception continuum in the philosophy and politics chapter located in the textbook talks about dispersed power and concentrated power. Dispersed power deals with an individual’s liberty, rights, and equality, whereas concentrated power deals more with the state, conformity, and inequality (Horner, Hunt, Okholm, and Stafford 216). From these descriptions, I would say that I fall more towards dispersed power on the perception continuum. The reason that I fall more towards dispersed power is because it deals with all individuals being considered equal and having the same type of freedom and rights as one another. The reason that I tend to fall away from concentrated power is because I feel that it deals with what is good for the state and not what is good for the people of the state. I agree with dispersed power because I truly believe that every individual should have the same opportunity to attend college. However, I personally believe that college has become more about making money than about the importance of educating the future members of our society. I feel colleges are more concerned about the people who can afford to attend than trying to help those who don’t ever dream of attending because of how outrageously expensive it is.
