The Wire, an HBO TV show, manages to mention many aspects of the city of West Baltimore, including the drug life, schooling system, the police department and political officials. In the schooling system, a program is started for troubled students, but as one of the teachers describes it, “Just studying some shit.” Although the show has people who sees the possibilities of why the Corner Boys program is a “flawed” program, I argue that there are benefits from continuing it that are overlooked. The show brings up the idea of the Corner Boys Program; does the program have effective work and who is benefited from it? The answer is quite simple; the program benefits those involved directly and indirectly. The show makes us notice that the superintendent shuts down the Corner Boys Program, based on one incident that happened in class; the fight between two students. Later in the season, a fight between two girls occurs while the superintendent is present. For the superintendent, her biggest deal is, is the kids learning anything? Although the superintendent failed to see it, I argue that Namond is benefited the most out of all the students. Yes, he had some rough occasions at first, but then he became more mature. Later in the season, the kids go back to their regular class and one student blurts out in class. Looking a Namond for the acceptance of his behavior, Namond does nothing which in return makes the kids apologize. Namond has transitioned from the outburst of “Fuck you” to the more well-behaved student he knows how to be. We see at the end of the season how Bunny adopts Namond and his is on the stoop of the stairs doing homework. Although the students are not in their original classroom, the Wire allows us to see how the school becomes more and more effective as days go
