Death row inmates: Using for medical experiments “Every single year, more than 100 million animals are killed in U.S. laboratories because of medical testing” (peta.org). Of course, it is very beneficial that we test new medicines to detect, diagnose, and monitor new treatments. The inability to test new treatments would limit medical advances in fighting diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Some have suggested using death row inmates for medical testing which would eliminate the need to use animals. According to Debatewise, “Under our definition, this House should allow medical experiments on prisoners without consent under the supervision of U.S. Department of Health & Human Services” (Debatewise). Although this topic may be controversial to some, death row inmates should be used for medical experiments because they are going to die anyway, the medical research would be more useful on humans, and there is no reason to harm animals. Some death row inmates may voluntary agree to the testing, knowing they could help impact new medicine. Surely some have great regret for their previous actions, and helping develop new treatments might really be something the prisoner would like to do. Participating in research ‘can be regarded as a public good,’ and prisoners should be afforded the opportunity to contribute to this good if they want to, Draper wrote (Maron). According to Draper, it seems that if any prisoner asks to participate in medical test, researchers would be happy to test them. Being locked in a cell for life, I can only imagine that it can lead to depression, and helping participate in a good cause could be a life changing event for them. After all, the least a murderer or a rapist could do for society is help detect a problem in a new medical study which could ultimately benefit thousands of
