Recommended: Why animal testing is not ethical

Humans use many tests to check the reliability and safety of products such as medications and cosmetics, and specific types of testing use inhumane methods to produce results. Finding new medical treatments is extremely important, but sometimes people abuse their rights and resort to unnecessary and dangerous tactics to find solutions. Animal testing is a practice of brutality that is forced upon millions of animals worldwide. Out of all the reasons to explain why this practice is wrong, the most important has to be that it is cruel. Animals that are operated on in experiments undergo pain through intervals of physical imprisonment, burns to examine healing process, and other wounds to look at possible medicines (“Animal Testing”). Animals are also exposed to force-feeding and starvation. It is either one extreme or the other. The most common animals to be tested on are rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and primates. An example of a test is the Draize eye exam. Cosmetic firms use it to see what discomfort shampoo causes. The differences between animals and humans are too great not to notice. Humans and animals can be separated by cellular, anatomic, and metabolic distinctions (“Animal Testing”). The fact that animals have different features makes them faulty subjects for humans. Drugs that make it through animal trials are not always appropriate. Just because a product was successful on a rodent doesn’t mean it will be on a human. When the drug Vioxx was available for arthritis, it was thought to be safe for humans since it was on mice, but 27,000 people ended up dying from heart attacks and cardiac arrest. In another instance with the sleeping pill Thalidomide, 10,000 babies were born with birth defects while tests on animals showed no deformities unless Thalidomide was distributed at extreme
