The legalization of marijuana has recently been a greatly debated issue in America, especially in the media. There are many people for the legalization and many people against, for multiple different reasons. Many people think that legalizing marijuana is needed for medical purposes and has the opportunity to create new jobs. It is also believed that marijuana is no worse and may even be less harmful than the effects of alcohol or nicotine. Reasons for opposing it include the effect it will have on young children as well as the fact that many people still believe that it is a drug that harms the brain and body. The media covering this popular topic describes both positions and I believe that the coverage of the legalization was solid overall. The mainstream media plays a big part in the legalization of marijuana news. CBS news published an article on how legalizing marijuana has affected Colorado and if it is good or bad. Opinions from different people were presented throughout the article. Some supported the use of marijuana and others were against it. The media source called Raw Source explains that legalizing marijuana would not be a good idea for many reasons. According to Governor Chris Christie, “This is pure stupidity” (Johnson 3). It explains how marijuana is believed to be a gateway drug that will lead to worse substances and how legalizing marijuana is comparable to legalizing heroine. Also this article seems to be biased against the legalization or marijuana, it also offers a different opinion. Scutari refuted his argument saying that not legalizing it would be the wrong thing to do. According to Scutari “ marijuana is being used to treat opioid abuse” (Johnson 4). This article seemed to have less bias due to it mentioning both sides in some way, even if it focuses more on why legalization of marijuana is not
