In the book, My Sister’s Keeper, many arguments can be made regarding the morals of this novel. One of the main points that I disagree with would have to be the fact of how the parents genetically created a child. Numerous concepts are medically and ethically wrong with the idea of creating a child solely for the use of their body. I take into consideration that extreme measures should be appropriated in order to help a sick child; everyone should get a chance for long and healthy life. But I do not agree with “genetically modifying” a baby. In this argumentative paper, I will try my best to explain why the idea of genetically conceiving a child is immoral. I think one major problem that reflects on the whole summary of the novel is the feeling a child may get of not actually being wanted. If someone knows that they were genetically created only for the purpose of helping a sibling, they may start to wonder, is this the only reason why I’m here? Children who begin questioning the purpose of their existence can create much deeper problems for them in the future. If picking and choosing your child’s traits become the standard, than a domino affect may occur which will result in all of the population having access to genetically modifying their children. Society wants individual to look a certain way, which could mean that people would alter their children to look “beautiful”. At that, all sense of uniqueness and individuality will vanish within time. The world will be altered so drastically that the way we live life may be distorted forever. That idea seems infinitesimal now, but if the idea of stipulating your child’s traits becomes accepted, we might never return to the civilized way of life we live
