It has been suggested that a citizenship question could be added to the next population census. It has been previously reported that places with lower response rates typically correspond to places with higher Hispanic and/or poor populations. The inclusion of this type of question would produce inaccurate population counts in states like Texas that have a large percentage of Hispanic residents according to it its opponents. The government provides federal services and programs (anything from healthcare to transportation) to states based on the population of each state; therefore, undercounting the population would be an easy way for the government to save themselves money. The article mentions a point that seemed very valid in my opinion – including the question is likely to be a strong deterrent to people responding honestly or at all to the census. Those who are not citizens are unlikely to answer honestly if they believe it could bring them legal trouble. Instead of asking whether or not someone is a U.S. citizen, it seems that it would be more important to get an accurate and realistic count of the number of people that are living in the state. The people who choose not to answer the question will not be counted in the census but they will most definitely still derive benefits from the state. They will still be counted by Texas when it comes to things such as education, transportation, and health and human services because Texas does not inquire into your U.S. citizenship status when providing these. Basically, the government will be off the hook for providing financial assistance for the portions of those services receive by those who are uncounted. Those people are not counted on a federal level but they are still counted on a state level. I have not been able to come up with any good reason as to why a citizenship question should be included on the census because the only thing
