Our government has become so large that it has literally crowded out any other type of influential institutions from the public imagination. Citizens are constantly criticizing the government for their actions yet when something goes wrong society turns to and expects the government to fix it. The government funds programs such as food stamps, housing, prescription drugs, and medical care as well as hundreds of others, but, because of the rising cost of funding these programs it is becoming increasingly difficult for the government to stay ahead. With all of the programs currently funded by the government, even with an accurately predicted cost of a Social Security Act the long term sustainability of such a program is highly unlikely. I believe the government should provide citizens with protection through laws and a fair justice system as well as help the poor and sick. What I don’t believe is that the government should force people to pay for a Social Security program through taxes that has no way of being properly funded in the future. Ryan Messmore in the article A Moral Case Against Big Government describes a good but limited government as one that “serves its citizens by exercising well its particular task and refraining from other” (Messmore, 2007). …show more content…

In part, the Social Security Act would be so expensive because it is available to everyone, no matter what their financial situation is. The poor and rich alike all qualify for this program and number of people that participate will continue to rise each year. Should all American’s be forced to pay taxes for Warren Buffets retirement when he is obviously financially capable of paying for his own
