During the dedication ceremony on November 19th 1963, Abraham Lincoln gave one of the most famous speeches today. Lincoln gave the short speech “Gettysburg Address” to dedicate land to any fallen soldiers, calling it the Soldier’s National Cemetery. He wanted to remind the listeners what they were fighting for, and to give a definite intended audience. The American Civil War started 1861, when southern states seceded from the Union to continue practicing slavery.
An Analysis of Gettysburg Address One war that had a huge impact on America was the Civil War. In this war it was the Confederates (South) and Union (North) this was a battle where brothers would fight brothers. It destroyed many men in the States, they had to fight against their own people. During this big war there was one major battle that was a turning point for the war.
The Gettysburg address is the most iconic speech in our nation’s history. Some might say that Abraham Lincoln was our greatest president our nation has ever have, they might be right. Everyone knows him for what he did to free the slaves. Is also known for the greatest speech in American history, the Gettysburg Address. Why is this a famous speech?
Specifically, 1776 the year we gained our independence from Great Britain. He reminds us where we came from and how we as people joined together in the past to defeat a common enemy. Abraham Lincoln reminds us that we came from a king that showed no mercy towards us Americans. President Lincoln takes time to show honor for all of those who fought in battle and got wounded or killed. “The Gettysburg Address” is specifically made up to this point in time in our nation’s gruesome history.
“ I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal.” Dr. King also states that one day he would like his children to be free as whites were. “ I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character.” Dr. King uses his own words to describe what he wants the nation to look like in the future. “ I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of interposition and nullification; one day right there in Alabama, little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.”
Without trying to risk anything, you will never be able to succeed. “To try is to risk failure, but risk must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing -Anonymous.” Like the quote said, risk must be taken. Without risks, you would not be at your full potential. In “The Most Dangerous Games”, by Richard Connell, the quote interlocks with Rainsford based on the decisions he made and risks he took.
The United States thought freedom was independence from Britain, but issues such as slavery, human rights and the true meaning of freedom came along starting the Civil War around 1862. Then after winning the battle, the definition of freedom in the country changed again for the better. One of the way the Civil War shaped America was ending slavery. It became illegal in the South after war, allowing African Americans to be free, and this ended up giving them about the same amount of freedom a lot of white Americans had.
He uses a strong choice of diction and syntaxes to appeal to the emotions of his audience. Pieces of his speech such as, “...testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated. can long endure,” and, “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here,” show his overwhelming feeling towards what he is speaking about. The civil war left a deep impression on Lincoln and he let that shine through as he gave the Gettysburg Address. The Gettysburg Address was intended to be an argument to persuade. Abraham Lincoln was inspiring his troops because morale was low after the Battle of Gettysburg. They need motivation to keep fighting. Lincoln used logos by explaining that because people gave their lives defending what they believed in, the living should finish the job the dead started. By talking about the fellow soldiers who died at Gettysburg, Lincoln appeals to the pathos of his listeners.

Abraham Lincoln used literary devices like alliteration, repetition, and personification to produce a special effect in his speech. He stated his speech off with an allusion.
The use of ethos and repetition instills a great sense of togetherness to show that the entire country should stand without division. He also repeats the word "here" throughout the speech to emphasize that this point in time has proven to be a crucial turning point in the Civil War. He uses "here" as a term to define the position of America rather than the physical location. Through repetition, Lincoln is able to create a speech that maintains cohesiveness. The Gettysburg Address has always been one of the most important speeches throughout history.
