The United States of America was built from the consequence of war. The thirteen colonies came together to form a country and eventually seceded from Great Britain and fought in the American Revolution. Through the years, this nation has been through many wars. One of the most important wars in the nation's history was the American Civil War. This war changed the shape and direction of our country. Arguably one of the most important battles in this war was the Battle of Gettysburg. By the time the Civil War was over in 1865, over 600,000 Americans died and the country would never be the same. Abraham Lincoln went to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to honor the lives that were lost at the opening ceremony of the new cemetery. He prepared a speech that was secondary to the speech that everyone was there to hear given by the former governor of Massachusetts Edward Everett. Lincoln's speech was just about two minutes long and he tried to persuade people that even though they are mourning the loss of their loved ones, the war must go on. Many people wanted the war to be over but he said that the people that died in this war would die in vain if they were to stop fighting. His Gettysburg Address stated that the Civil War is being fought to save the principle of equality (Gettysburg Address). The first line of the address was “Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the propositions that all men were created equal”(Lectures and Speeches). Once the speech was heard by all, there was mixed emotions. Some loved what he said and others did not.
