Jessica Nelson Beach 3rd Honors World Lit. 10 September 2015 Socratic Seminar (Question 3) The Tipping Point of a product is like the outbreak of a disease. It’s what makes it memorable to the point where everyone knows what one is talking about. In the introduction Gladwell says, “These three characteristics- one, contagiousness; two, the fact that little causes can have big effects; and three, that change happens not gradually but at one dramatic moment- are the same three principles that define how measles moves through a grade-school classroom or the flu attacks every winter” (Gladwell 9). Over the past few years there have been many atrocious events from shooting to bombings. One thing led to another just based off of the environment people lived in. Gladwell states, “Environmental Tipping Points are things that we can change: we can fix broken windows and clean up graffiti and change the signals that invite crime in the first place”(Gladwell 167). This is saying that we can all pitch in and cause a good Tipping Point in the world. We can prevent crime. Majority of time person doesn’t just get angry, it's built up anger that eventually explodes out of a person and causes them to do things they wouldn’t normally do. Also people do things based off of what they are used to. For instance the end of chapter four says, “ But in reality it is no more than an obvious and commonsensical extension of the Power of Context, because it says simply that children are powerfully shaped by their environment , that the features of our immediate social and physical world- the streets we walk down, the people we encounter - play a huge role in shaping who we are and how we act”(Gladwell 168). If we all changed as many of the negative things around and made them positive, the world would become a much better place. This can be started with one person. One person spreading great things around and giving people reasons to change. For instance, relate the world to the kids growing up now. Ask, would you want your child or grandchild living in the world we live in today? Change it today, and one person at a time the idea will tip and make the world a better
