Many people come to the United States to create a better future, receive greater opportunities or obtain a better education. Both of my parents are undocumented immigrants, and I myself am an undocumented immigrant. Seeing my parents’ struggle leaving their home country and move to a foreign land when I was three years old, has molded me into who I am and who I want to become. Being an undocumented immigrant has taught me that my worth does not come from a piece of paper but what I have to offer, and my potential. In Mexico, my parents struggled to provide for my brothers and me. After losing his job and moving our family to the United States, not a day goes by that I do not see my father come home sweaty, tired, and worried. Watching my parents struggle to pay the rent with the constant fear of losing our home, and when I remember days we did not have enough money to eat a full meal, let alone buy a new pair of shoes, I feel helpless. I wanted to get a job so I could help my parents pay rent and provide basics, like shoes and backpacks for my siblings and me. Without a Social Security card I could not get a job. Again, another document was standing in my way, I could not believe how my illegal status interfered with my determination to find a job so that I could help support my family financially.
