Upon hearing the word “valedictorian,” many visualise an incredibly intelligent, studious young person who must be better than the rest, which to some can seem unfair--rewarding one student in front of so many hardworking others-- it’s a bit discouraging. On the other hand, one thing a valedictorian can do is write an impressive essay. In Margaret Talbot’s article “Best in Class,” she illustrates her idea that the idealistic of valedictorian isn’t necessarily awful, but can be improved upon in order to appeal to a larger group of hardworking people. Talbot uses various testimonies and anecdotes from previous students throughout her piece in order to establish her logos and/or ethos. For starters, the first example Talbot pulls is from a former
“Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.” This quote by Babe Ruth shows how Babe Ruth always tried for what he wanted no matter what the circumstance had been. Babe Ruth has had a passion for baseball since he was a little boy and when he finally achieved his goals of making it to be playing as a professional baseball player nothing else would come even close to being as special to him as that. Spirit Week in Ronald Reagan High School is typically a great time to have some unique fun with friends, while also being a time to pridefully represent yourself as an amusing member of the student body. Since freshman year I have thoroughly enjoyed the idea of a Spirit Week, but I also appreciated the idea that the students of Reagan get to contribute to the Spirit Week days almost directly. Traditionally, Student Council and the members within it are the ones who think of the clever Spirit Week plans, and ordinarily the execution is fantastic. Yet this year there has been a serious rise in tension considering the student body's views on one of the Spirit Week Days.
A month before homecoming, Mount Washington High always post the list. On the list it names the prettiest and ugliest girls in each grade. There are copies everywhere. The list is written by a new person each year but no one ever finds out who it is. The girls become the center of attention for homecoming month.
Wealth, poverty, technology, decadence, the Gilded Age was a time of change and uprooting of past systems, schools of thought, and standards. It was a time of both hope and doubt for the majority of the population and brought many to be empty handed or exceedingly wealthy. The dynamic between rich and poor was shifting to a gap of wealth never before seen in the young country. The gilded age’s built up wealth disparity faded away over time. Yet today it seems that a resurgence of these features is rearing its ugly head again.

Obama once said “And no matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you’ll need an education to do it.” (Obama 67-71) College education is typically considered to be very useful when one is wanting their dream career or a career with good annual pay. Americans tend to believe that going to college is a must to become successful in life. I believe that it is more beneficial to go to college than not going to college because of better job opportunities that are available after college. If you go to college you further your education and job opportunities with better pay and better benefits will be available to you. I’ve always believed that going to college is the only way to get a good paying job. According to The University of North Texas in their article “Why Go to College?”
Why People Should Not Go to College People should not go to college because is difficult to find out what career choice as a result of the inexperience and little information, the potential loans are overwhelming, and the huge necessity to start working immediately after school. In fact, many high school students go to college because it is expected of them, but that is not a good reason to go. If the students are facing pressure from their parents, friends, or teachers to attend college, but they do not feel ready. A person who wants to attend college should not take on such a large financial and time commitment just to please other people. College is expensive, and it does not make sense to spend money on a college degree if they are unsure of their path.
Ignoring students that aren’t the brightest but prioritize learning above all else (student 2) for students with excellent standardized test scores (student 1) seems like the norm these days. This norm is a significant dispute in the college admissions and real world. While no solution can quite capture the complexity of this situation, the Honors College should address the problem by only accepting applicants who are like student 2. By cherry-picking only the best of the best students, not only do prestigious schools allow the worst get worse, but they don’t contribute much to society.

Although college is stressful and time consuming , having your dream career, is a huge life achievement. Having a job isn’t the same as having a career “I've learned that making a 'living' is not the same thing as 'making a life”(Maya Angelou). If you sell yourself short by not going to college you’ll end up working just to make ends means not because it's what you enjoy doing, it's due to your family counting on it. Those who go to college will end up having a better future than those who don’t. I agree that going to college is more beneficial because my view on the topic states that in order to have a secure and clear future you must go to college.
