In the past, the idea of women serving in the military would've been seen as anything short of ridiculous. But in recent years women in America have broken new ground in stomping out stereotypes that only men are able to protect and defend our country. One of the biggest debates though has lingered on whether women are just as capable of serving in the military/combat positions as men.Though it would be hard to imagine with over 200,000 women today serving in active duty (source 2) not long ago the idea of them even being in uniform was heavily opposed due to what many believed that women in the military would “pose a potential threat to the good order and discipline. As a result, women face a higher chance of injury. Not only is this wrong, but it is arbitrary as it has been proven time and time again by women in service that they are physically capable as men (sometimes even more so). An example of this would be SSG Jessica Packard, in the US Air Force, who scored the fastest course time of both sexes in the 2009 Firefighter Combat Challenge which consisted of carrying a 175-pound victim while wearing full bunker gear. (Source 3). Not only do women show their capabilities in training, but have also outdone most men in battle. Just as MAJ Kellie McCoy, an engineer platoon leader, did when she earned the Bronze Star with Valor when she ran through enemy fire not once but twice to rescue wounded soldiers in Iraq. (3). Though despite this, plenty of people still hold the fact that many women can sometimes like comparing to men in things such as physical strength and the APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test). But, as long as a recruit is qualified for the position, it is possible to calibrate recruitment/training standards for women.
