Slavery Feeds America/Victims of Hate Essay Despite modern belief, slavery still exists. The United Nations believes that there are currently over 27 million people caught in slavery. Slavery affects America in many ways including the food that its citizens eat. Slavery affects the fish, produce, and chocolate that are eaten constantly by Americans. Slaves catch fish that are eaten by Americans every day. In early April of 2015, hundreds of men were found on an island in Indonesia who were tricked into leaving their countries and were forced to catch fish in terrible conditions for little or no pay. This fish is caught "for consumers around the world…". One of the countries these fish are sent to is the United States. The fish caught by these enslaved fisherman has been linked to the supply chains of some of the largest retailers in America. Slave labor provides cheap fish for customers all around the world. Slaves harvest produce that is eaten by Americans. In the book Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, the slaves would work all day on plantations. Cocoa farmers use child slaves to harvest cocoa for very little or no pay in return. Cocoa farmers were"'driven by the business proposition of getting cheap child labor to produce the cocoa …"'(Bama Athreya). These farmers are not only driven to do this because of their low income, but also because of the demand for cheap cocoa from chocolate producing companies. These companies include Nestle, Mars, and Hershey's (Slavery in the Chocolate Industry)that are popular in the US. Using child labor is a way for the farmers to keep their prices lower, so that the companies buy chocolate from them(Slavery in the Chocolate Industry).
