Diving in Soccer Argumentative Essay Joseph Leary writes, “Diving is to create a challenge out of whole cloth, to fall to the ground after no contact at all” (Paste Magazine 1). Fouls occur all the time in the game of soccer. Some fouls are blatant and easy for a referee to declare a foul while others are controversial and not as easy to call. The controversy comes when players dive, or flop, when they are defended in order to get the referee to give them a call in their favor. The ultimate goal when diving is to gain a free kick or to get the opponent cautioned with a yellow card of ejected from the game with a red card. It talks about how someone can perform the simulations properly in order to get the most benefits out of it. iSports decares, “One fact about soccer that every player should know is that diving is not cheating. In fact it’s part of the game that can protect player and help referees make the right call” (iSports 1). This presents that flopping benefits soccer flopping benefits soccer because it helps the referees, who have to use their eyes only and no replays, to make the right calls about fouls from the signal that a player has gone down. This also presents that diving is right because it makes the job of the referee much easier to get the right calls if players fall when they are fouled. However, on the other hand an article from the Slate talks about how flopping is affecting soccer and it also includes what Dave Egger, American writer, thinks of diving. Dave Egger expresses, “But flopping in soccer is a problem. Flopping is essentially a combination of acting, lying, begging, and cheating, and these four behaviors make from an unappealing mix. The sheer theatricality of flopping is distasteful” (The Slate 1). This explains that diving is plundering soccer because it creates a disturbing image of cheating and trickery in the minds of the spectators. This also explains that diving is not right because acting, lying, begging, and cheating are immoral actions to do. Performing these actions on the soccer pitch does not make them right.
