About a couple years ago, my brother was diagnosed with ADHD. ADHD stands for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. We believe it came from my mother but she didn’t know because she decided to help provide for her family by working instead of finishing school, it wasn’t her main focus, but for my brother it is. After they found out, many doctors recommended putting him on medication. My parents talked it over with my brother and decided not to put him on stimulant ADHD medication. Over 6.1 million children in the US are diagnosed with ADHD (General Prevalence). To help children stay focused in school, many parent decide to put their kids on ADHD medication. In 1955 psychostimulant ritalin became a very popular for treating ADHD and the diagnoses of ADHD have increased.This form of treatment is still used today (Holland and Higuera). Even then, parents have put their children on medication for ADHD to control how’d they interact and so the kids would stay focused. Everyone was seeing the benefits from the stimulate medication, but no one really focused on the possible harmful side effects. Also at this time many parents saw ADHD as huge downfall and thought less of children with ADHD so the stimulant medication was the key to stopping people think that. “ADHD was first mentioned in 1902. British pediatrician Sir George Still described “An abnormal defect of moral control in children.” He found that some affected children could not control their behavior the way a typical child would, but they were still intelligent” (Holland and Higuera). Although ADHD can cause a child to struggle with school or staying focused, it does not affect how much they know. It is not necessary to put the children on the medication.
