Reproductive health has been a popular topic to discuss with adolescents and adults; whether it be sex education, contraception, or abortion. Contraception is the use of artificial methods to prevent pregnancy. The idea of contraception dates back before the use of birth control pills and shots. The techniques varied from condoms, female barrier methods, herbs and rituals and all the way to pills. To prevent unwanted pregnancy in adolescents or adults, the use of birth control is not only a little pill you take every day, but a way of life. The birth control pill is a useful and beneficial medication that any women over the age of 18 can receive because it regulates their menstrual cycle, decreases unwanted pregnancy, and provides medical benefits. If you have a condition that can be worsened by menstruation such as, endometriosis, asthma, migraines, or epilepsy, birth control pills can help prevent symptoms . For me, I used to get migraines associated with menstruation. In fact, 60% of women who experience migraines associate the timing of them with their period . By taking birth control pills, it can make migraines less common or stop them completely, they did for me.
