Men and Birth Control Today, we all know the types of birth control methods offered to women, whether it be pills, shots, rings, patches, or even implants. But for men today, only two methods are available, which are the condoms and vasectomies. But what if men were offered much more choices? With women having more than ten methods of birth control available to them, male birth control is slowly making its way in through medical field. Advancements in science will bring male birth control pills and shots a lot sooner than we may think, and it is about time men take matters into their hands. Male birth control should revolutionize everything we know about contraceptive measures because men should be able to finally take control of their new methods to keep up with gender equality. Two new types of methods are being introduced for men to start using. First, new oral contraceptives have been in study for men to take daily. Since the 1950s, women have put up with our side effects, despite how uncomfortable they may be. As of today, “More than 99 percent of sexually experienced women between the ages of 15 and 44 in the United States have used at least one contraceptive method” (Side Effects). When it comes to men, this percentage drops down drastically, and not for the right reasons. For women, “[b]irth control pills also often cause users to experience weight gain, acne, decreased libido, breast pain, yeast infections, headaches, nausea, and even more serious side effects such as blurred vision, chest pain, and blood clots” (Side Effects). Looking at this list, that is clearly much longer, causes a lot of controversy among the treatment of men and women.
