Birth control has created a social stigma that if a woman takes birth control it is seen as ‘unladylike’ or even ‘slutty.’ It even opens up the double standard that women cannot enjoy and protect themselves from unwanted pregnancy while men, who only have one main form of contraceptive, nearly get praised for carrying around a condom. While birth control commonly makes people assume that the only purpose is to prevent pregnancy, there is several other reasons that women take birth control such as acne, heavy periods, and can even help people who are anemic. The stigma over birth control creates sexist divides, but also shames women into thinking that if they do take birth control that they should hide it and not let anyone know that they do. Overall, the stigmas and issues that surround birth control should be eliminated and more normalized. Although birth control is a useful tool to prevent pregnancy, there are several other reasons that people take birth control which people often ignore. The severe ignorance about birth control seems to stem from issues of gender roles and blatant sexism. “Women are taught to always hide who they are” (Her Campus, 2013.) We’re told that we need to keep our legs closed, dress modestly, and act ladylike. It becomes highly taboo when we, women, start to talk about things like sex, and birth control.
